A School Assignment That Took A Dark Turn?

Hi there. I've been out of school for a week, and, now that I have more time on my hands, I've realized that I haven't been posting much lately. For that I am sorry. But just keep in mind, obviously, it takes time to write a well-thought-out horror story. Fear not though, for I am working on another project. However, in the meantime, I thought I'd just give you an appetizer, shall we say?

So what's this all about? "A School Assignment That Took A Dark Turn?" Well, this particular assignment was titled "The Rock." My science teacher's instructions were to write a story about the rock cycle. We could get as creative with it as we wanted. What I turned in wasn't exactly scary, or anything, but was probably not what the teacher was expecting. But, like I said, this is just an appetizer. Anyway, I present to you... "The Rock!"

Once upon a time, there was some sediment, deep, deep underground. The sediments’ name was Sir Samurai Sediment. Sir Samurai Sediment has the most interesting backstory in the world. Once upon a time, he actually used to be magma. (Don’t worry, it gets better!) Then, while he was magma, and doing magma-knight-samurai-stuff, all of a sudden, he started to cool down. Cooling down is the coolest, and this is where the interesting stuff happens. Once he cooled down, he turned into igneous rock! This part is particularly interesting because igneous rock is the most common type of rock. But then, there was this tragic plot twist and the other samurai-knight-rock clans eroded and wore down poor Sir Samurai Sediment. That is how he got to be sediment in the first place.

Sir Samurai Sediment was sad to be but a lowly sediment. He stayed that way for a long while, wanting so desperately to become something more. He didn’t want help, but he needed it. But sometimes, I’ve found that it’s okay to help yourself. So, Sir Samurai Sediment got it in his heart to turn his life around and become something incredible once again.  Now, as a sediment, there is nothing for Sir Samurai Sediment to do but go through the processes of compaction and cementation. He knew it would be painful, but worth it, if he truly wanted to be the rock his rock teachers, parents, and friends wanted him to become. After the long and hard processes of cementation and compaction, he had become a sedimentary rock. This was wonderful for him, and the perfect motivator--for now he knew that he was destined to become much more. There was pressure and heat to come, but he could rest for now. However, when the time came, he withstood the great pressure and the extreme heat (both internal and external) and came out alive! He gave a hearty laugh once he found that he had become the most unique type of rock: metamorphic rock. Sir Samurai Sediment, whose name no longer made sense, was now everything he had dreamed of being from the beginning. Now he could shine like a supernova.

But… there was one problem. Sir Samurai Sediment knows that the vicious cycle repeats. He knows that he can rest for now, as a metamorphic rock, but the time will come for the cycle to repeat, whether or not he is ready. He knows this, and he fears for his well-being and sanity next year, when he is to go through the same triumphs, but also the same horrors as this year. Sir Samurai Sediment also knows very well that the horrors will be twice as bad next year. Because he knows this, he can barely recognize that his triumphs next year will be twice as good. Sir Samurai Sediment knows all this, but what he does not know is even more frightening than what he does know. He does not know if things will heat up and he will become magma once again, or if he will erode and break down faster than ever and become a sediment at the very beginning. He does not know if he can go through the processes of compaction and cementation. If he cannot… if he cannot, he will disintegrate into nothing. He does not know if his rock teachers, friends, or family will miss him when he disintegrates. He does know that his disintegration is inevitable, if it doesn’t happen next year, than the year after that, or the year after that, or the year after that… He cannot escape the cycle. He is trapped.
